In the past year, retail store closures and bankruptcy filings have become commonplace, with no sign of abating. Shifting consumer shopping habits and competition from fast-fashion retailers and e-commerce have led to a more competitive marketplace and, in general, decreasing profit margins for retailers. To survive this market, retailers need to “take charge” and articulate a real estate strategy to use their footprint more effectively and to mitigate the cost and distraction of unproductive stores.
Our panel of experts will discuss these strategies from various perspectives, including the landlord, tenant, secured lender, and investor. This will be an informative program that will discuss well-known retailers in bankruptcy (such as the BCBG and The Limited), as well as closings at giants such as Sears and Macy’s. The program will necessarily touch on real estate, litigation strategy, private equity, and finance.
